Euro 2024 - England v Slovakia

Betting Preview of England v SlovakiaAl Ross

Clunky England face one of Euro 2024's Dark Horses in the kockout phase. Al Ross picks his best tips. England’s headlines have been dominated by their lopsided formation and their uninspiring progression. That criticism's all legitimate, but let’s be honest, Slovakia were pounded by Belgium and if Lukaku could have hit a barn door, or VAR had done its job properly, Slovakia wouldn’t be in this tie.

Don’t be surprised if it takes a while from this blunt England side to break Slovakia down. Don’t be surprised if Slovakia run out of legs – they’re fielding the oldest starting 11 in the tournament and they’re not a possession team so they do a lot of running. Unless the impressive Lobotka can lay it on a plate for any of their unimpressive strikers, or Slovakia get lucky from a set piece, then they’ll struggle to score. No goals in the first half is priced around 6/4, but the real value is with William Hill who are offering Draw at Half-time, but England to win in 90 mins, at 3/1.

England’s wealth of talent up front is well documented, as is their lack of cohesion so far, but UEFA’s insistence on rewarding negativity and mediocrity with places in the knockout rounds means that all we’ve really learned is how England can’t break through stubborn defences. I do wonder how things will change when England play a more expansive team, but Slovakia aren’t going to be it, so expect another grind.

Under 2.5 Goals and Under 10 corners is priced around 7/5 across the board. I have a feeling England are going to to win this ugly with a 1-0 or 2-0 scoreline, so I'm going England and under 2.5 goals which in most places is just under 2/1.
