I’m going to say it. England can win this.

However, let’s do this on the facts in front of us, not just that to the naked eye, Gareth Southgate’s side have been a shambles so far. Let’s take the tubthumping out of it and look at this as a betting matter.

On one side, England with 3 wins from their last 9, and that last one was a bit tight wasn’t it?

They’ve lost to Iceland in that run as well. Switzerland rang rings round Italy last weekend, making it a run of 8 games unbeaten. They held Germany to a 1-1 draw as well as Austria in that run. They’ll press the bejaysus out of this England side and that is a worry for a new back 3 of Walker, Stones and probably Konza.

So yes you could go with the heart and say England or go with the form and say that Switzerland are the better team here and no, I can’t give you a reason why over the 90 minutes you would say 11/4 or even bigger on the Swiss is not a superb bet. 6/4 to qualify? Yes please. Embolo any time at 4/1? Yes please. In fact Xhaka at 11/1 any time or Vargas from distance again at 7/1 can all be taken.

So yes, England CAN win this but the facts and the stats suggest it’s the Swiss that roll on to the semis.

Switzerland to win in 90mins at 11/4

Embolo any time at 4/1
