Lights go out for the first race of the 2025 Formula 1 in Australia on the 16th of March.
Here are a few of the rule changes for the new F1 season.
A point for the fastest lap: Brought in to F1 in 2019, gone for 2025.
Qualifying classification: If qualifying cannot take place for any reason. The grid order for the race will be based on the Drivers Championship standings. Should qualifying not happen for the first race of the season in Australia, when there is no Drivers Championship standings, the grid positions will be decided by the stewards.
Heat hazard: If temperatures at a race are forecast to, or exceed 31c, a heat hazard will be declared. Teams will be required to fit a mandated driver cooling system to the car.
Rookie testing: Previously, F1 teams had been required to designate 2 practice sessions a season to allow rookie drivers to drive the car. This has been increased to 4 practice sessions across the season.
Testing previous cars: TPC as it is known, allows teams and drivers to test old F1 cars that are between 2-4 years old. For the first time, this testing has been limited to 20 days a year. Race drivers can only take part in four days of TPC, and cannot run more than 1,000 km in total.
Tighter restrictions of DRS: This season there are tighter restrictions on the rear wing drag-reduction-system to prevent "mini-drs" concepts, this is where the rear wing of the F1 car tilts back to reduce drag.
The rear wing must automatically return to its normal position after DRS is deactivated and DRS can only be in two positions: open or closed
