League 2 English Football Betting Preview 5th October

Al Ross finds the value in the League 2 Betting Markets this weekend

05-10-24 League 2 Football Preview

My pick of the day has to be Fleetwood Town to beat Bromley. A Fleetwood side whose only losses this season were to Aston Villa, to Stoke on a shootout, and away to AFC Wimbledon. All of which are very different propositions to Bromley at home. It’s been 10 matches since Bromley won in 90 minutes, but they do have the division’s top scorer in Michael Cheek, and both sides are averaging 3 goals a game so far this season - so by all means take Fleetwood at 4/5 as part of your acca for the weekend. But if William Hill will give you 15/2 that Cheek scores for Bromley but Fleetwood win the match (and they will) then that’s worth a look as a single, but I’m going even further. Of Cheek’s 6 goals this season, 5 of them have been the game’s first goal. To reiterate; in their 9 games, he’s been the first goalscorer in 5 of them. So 20/1 Cheek to score first but Fleetwood to win is a very reasonable price.

Elsewhere, it's been 11 competitive games and 9 defeats for Carlisle this season. A 300-mile, 6-hour trip to Colchester isn’t what they’d want. The last team an away side won any fixture been these two sides was pre-pandemic, so I can live with Colchester at an odds against price of 11/10 with Ladbrokes. Here’s a bizarre stat, there’s been a first half goal in the last 14 straight Carlisle away games, so a goal in both halves at 8/11 isn’t the worst either. If you want a bigger price this week, don’t trust leaders Gillingham at Crewe. Crewe have 3 wins from their last three at home with an aggregate 9-1 scoreline., while 13 of Gillingham’s 19 points this season have come at home. On top of that, last time out they dominated against Grimsby after falling behind early on, but still only managed 2 shots on target in a 1-0 home defeat. These are all good reasons to think the 7/4 price on a home win with Unibet is a good choice. So my outright treble this week would be Fleetwood 4/5, Colchester 11/10 and Crewe 7/4 at just shy of 10/1.

And as a bonus, one word on the cards markets as AFC Wimbledon look to focus on the matters on the pitch (as opposed to the matters of their pitch). They are at the top of the fair play table for league two, and they’re travelling to the team who are at the top, despite playing a game less than most. So if you can find card markets on this one, and they're anything bigger than around 1/2, back Salford FC to get the most booking points.
