The best bets for the Scottish Grand National

We’re off to the Scottish Grand National at Ayr at 3.35 on Saturday afternoon, and with six (or even seven) places up for grabs, Tipstrr’s each-way specialists have come out in force to provide us with three of their most-fancied picks.

After Willie Mullins memorably grabbed all the glory at Aintree a week ago, it’s hardly surprising that there’s been a flurry of support for some of the six starters saddled by the red-hot Master of Closutton.

At the top of the betting, Chosen Witness is a progressive eight-year-old who won over hurdles at this meeting a year ago, and he has shown plenty of promise over larger obstacles this term.

Third of nine at Fairyhouse on New Year’s Day, he was cruising along nicely before unshipping his jockey four out when last seen at Navan two months ago, and he is expected to relish this marathon trip in handicap company.

If Chosen Witness looks the pick of the Mullins yard’s runners, then the more attractively-priced Captain Cody surely can’t be far behind, especially in light of the not insignificant booking of Harry Cobden in the saddle.

The seven-year-old also unseated his rider last time out at the Cheltenham Festival, but his previous promising displays suggest that this stamina test should suit, and in such capable hands, it would be no surprise to see him in the final shake-up.

Looking beyond the Mullins’ string, the consensus tip from Tipstrr HQ is that Our Power looks massively overpriced to force his way into the each-way places.

This Sam Thomas-trained 10-year-old was runner-up twice at Cheltenham either side of Christmas, and he carried that form into another frame finish in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Kempton last time out seven weeks ago.

Jockey Dylan Johnstone brings his useful three-pound claim back to the saddle, and if Our Power can last the marathon trip here, then he has to be respected more than his current 33/1 odds might suggest.
